Obituary for Rita Ann Pelt

Rita Ann Pelt
Rita Ann Pelt was born to Rebecca Robinson and Leonard Jones on September 28, 1958. She was raised by her aunt, Irene Elcock, along with Irene’s three daughters. After a fierce bought with illness, she was called home on July 5, 2018.
Rita attended St. Joseph’s High School, in Brooklyn, NY, and received bachelor’s degrees from both Fordham University in 1981 and City College in 1982. She loved music and married a fellow City College student, Isaac Pelt. When Isaac joined the United States Marine Corps, Rita used her many talents to hold multiple jobs including teaching music, preparing taxes, and playing piano in multiple bands. When the couple returned to New York City, she joined the New York Police Department, where she served for five years.
While serving in the NYPD, she began Law School at City University of New York at Queens College. She earned her Juris Doctorate in 1992 and began a career in Law at Nassau/Suffolk Law Services, serving as a Paralegal and then as a Staff Attorney.
Rita transitioned to be a self-practitioner, specializing in Family Law. She served as a guardian on both the Assigned Counsel Defender Panel in Nassau County and The Attorney for Children Panel in Brooklyn, avidly defending children’s rights. Outside of work, she trained as an electrician, taught children religious education classes, and recently received New York State certification as a Home Inspector.
Rita leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Isaac Malcolm-Jamaal Pelt; her daughter-in-law, Teneil Kari Pelt; her granddaughter, Arya Lottie Pelt; three sisters, Shirley Foster, Lisa Gordon, and Ruby Francis-Taylor; one great aunt, Lillian Landy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.
